When it comes to predicting the success stories of this upcoming Summer movie season, I have a hard time believing that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes won’t be one of the biggest. Matt Reeves, a director known for helming Cloverfield as well as one of the best horror remakes of recent memory in Let Me In, is directing the follow-up to Rupert Wyatt’s fantastic Rise of the Planet of the Apes and if this latest trailer is any indication, we are in for something special.
Dawn takes place a decade after the events of Rise. Caesar has grown his community of apes in the forests of San Francisco and everything appears to be going well until a group of human survivors stumble upon them. Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) takes on the human lead in the film while Andy Serkis returns to give what will no doubt be yet another fantastic motion capture performance as Caesar. Gary Oldman also makes his franchise debut as, you guessed it, a villainous human who has nothing but disdain for the apes.
Will Dawn of the Planet of the Apes deliver yet another tragic, heartbreaking entry in their newly revamped franchise? Based on this fantastic trailer, I’m willing to bet yes.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters everywhere July 11th.
