Raiden Revealed for ‘Mortal Kombat X’ at EVO 2014

Raiden

“I Stand Watch For Eternity” was the clue¬†creator Ed Boon teased fans with before finally unveiling the latest character set for the forthcoming fighting game, Mortal Kombat X. The reveal took place at the Evolution Championship Series fighting game tournament in Las Vegas this past weekend, directly after the Injustice finals. Fans were treated to a new exclusive trailer that showcased the return of Raiden, the iconic Thunder God. The trailer was followed by a thunderous round of applause as it ended with Raiden’s shocking new fatality, which you can check out via the trailer below.

The addition of Raiden adds a jolt of lightning to the roster of Mortal Kombat X, which to this point had unveiled just seven characters. Raiden joins Scorpion and Subzero as characters that were both in the very first Mortal Kombat game, back in 1991, and also are being included in the 10th installment of the series. Two other fighters from the original, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, will be featured in the game as well but probably won’t be lacing up their boots to fight. Rather, they’ll be cheering on their daughter, Cassie Cage.

This game takes place 25 years after the last Mortal Kombat and is choosing to put an emphasis on new characters, such as D’Vorah and Kotal Kahn, as well as the offspring of fighters in previous games (Cassie Cage) in addition to aged veterans. This is where Raiden comes in as the timeless, unforgettable character he is, standing watch for eternity over Earthrealm. I knew Raiden would make it into the newest Mortal Kombat game as he was the main protagonist of the previous game released in 2011, in which he survived Shao Kahn’s onslaught along with Cage and Sonya. Raiden was also the one who went back in time and altered the universe to prevent armageddon, in addition to being responsible for the deaths of many Earthrealm warriors, including Liu Kang. Who knows what’s in store for the Thunder God this time around, but I’m sure some will be seeking vengeance against him in one form or another. I’m also looking forward to seeing the effects of this time-altered Mortal Kombat universe and how they will specifically affect Earthrealm’s protector.

Judging by the looks of the trailer, Raiden will once again be a formidable warrior in the tournament. All of his classic moves are looking better than ever, including the superman, teleportation and lightning orbs. Also in this game, each character will now have the option of three different fighting styles at the start of any given match. Raiden’s have all but been revealed in this trailer. The first is known as Thunder God, which deals with several variations of lightning blasts that can deal heavy damage to an opponent. Second is Displacer, in which Raiden focuses on teleportaion, moving all over the screen assuring headaches for your opponents. Finally, there is Storm Lord, which focuses on traps that Raiden has never before utilized in any previous MK game. From the looks of it, Raiden is back from the heavens and looking to deal an insurmountable amount of damage to any warrior hell bent on destroying Earthrealm.

At the presentation, creator Ed Boon did not reveal Raiden’s place in the plot, but rather simply stated that “he’s still fighting the good fight”. The game’s main protagonist is also said to be a surprise returning character. Now that we know it’s not Raiden, who could it possibly be? Well, we here at MorbidlyAmusing.com will certainly have that news for you once it becomes available.
