THE HORROR REMAKE BLOODY BRACKET
The seventh showdown of Round One pits flesh-eating fish against the vampire next door. The first is a 3D update of the Roger Corman produced, Joe Dante directed classic, while the latter is a remake of the 1980s vampire flick starring Chris Sarandon as Jerry Dandrige, the neighbor of the night. Will everyone’s least-favorite fish feast, or will Jerry suck the blood of the aquatic fiend? Morbidly Amusing debates.
Piranha 3D (2010)
Fright Night (2011)
Dr. Morbid: This one wasn’t easy. Piranha 3D is a full-on gore-fest, filled with great 3D effects, blood and boobs. Alexandre Aja has proven that he’s got the chops to remake horror classics. Fright Night was surprisingly entertaining with a great performances by Colin Farrell. David Tennant also does a commendable job portraying Peter Vincent. But, Piranha 3D has Christopher Lloyd. Lloyd wins. Victor: Piranha 3D
That Other Raimi Brother: As someone who is not a very big fan of the recent 3D trend, I went into my midnight screening of Piranha 3D expecting the worst, and boy was I right. The film itself is quite fun at times and is definitely self-aware enough to be entertaining, but the 3D was really lackluster and actually took away some of my enjoyment. Fright Night is a remake of one of my favorite 80s horror films and although I went in not expecting much, I was pleasantly surprised. Colin Farrell was an interesting Jerry and David Tennant (my favorite Doctor for the record) gave a fun turn as Peter Vincent. Although it doesn’t come close to the original, the Fright Night re-do was quite simply a good time at the movies. Victor: Fright Night
Ross Tweedy: I actually haven’t seen Fright Night because it looked lame. Piranha 3D was at least self-aware enough to know how fucking ridiculous it truly was. Also, it had Doc Brown in it! Victor: Piranha 3D
Piranhas tear Jerry a new one in 3D as Alexandre Aja moves on to Round Two for a second time, 2 votes to 1.
