The Horror Remake Bloody Bracket – Round Two: Piranha 3D (2010) VS. Maniac (2012)
THE HORROR REMAKE BLOODY BRACKET
Round Two
The final matchup of Round Two features two remakes of cult horror classics that square off to decide what the final film will be to advance on to the final four. The first is an update of Joe Dante’s killer-fish flick while the second places the consistently creepy Elijah Wood in the role of demented serial killer Frank. What remake moves on? Morbidly Amusing debates.
Piranha 3D (2010)
VS
Maniac (2012)
Dr. Morbid: Alexandre Aja the director and Alexandre Aja the producer battle each other in this round. Piranha 3D is the definition of a popcorn horror film and delivered on all the gory carnage it promised. Maniac is an awesome remake of a sleazy exploitation film that somehow got turned into an artistic experiment, using a unique first-person perspective. The gore is on full-display in both of these films, but Elijah Wood creeps into Round Three. Victor: Maniac
Ross Tweedy: Piranha 3D was nothing great and while Elijah Wood does creepy well, the same could be said of Maniac. Since it’s a bracket though, I gotta pick a winner. Keep on swimming Piranha 3D. Victor: Piranha 3D
That Other Raimi Brother: While Piranha 3D is an entertaining horror film, my 3D theater experience actually took away from my enjoyment of the film. Maniac is not only one of the best horror films I’ve seen in recent memory, it’s an artfully done film that manages to take the concept of the original and improve upon it. Elijah Wood gives a perfectly creepy performance and the unique cinematography really sets it apart from other recent remakes. Victor: Maniac
Frank survives the bloody, piranha-filled waters and becomes the last film to advance on to Round Three, taking 2 out of 3 votes.
Up Next: ROUND THREE!
