After delivering a fantastic performance in The Impossible back in 2012, many predicted big things from young British actor Tom Holland. Well, it doesn’t get much bigger than Spider-Man.

The folks over at Marvel and Sony have officially announced that Holland is officially set to star as Peter Parker’s alter-ego in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first standalone Spidey film, which is currently set for release on July 28, 2017. He is expected to debut in a cameo in next year’s Captain America: Civil War.

Director Jon Watts has also been officially announced as the director of the first Spider-Man film. His recent directorial effort, Cop Car, has received acclaim ahead of its limited release stateside this August.

As a life-long Spider-Man fan, I can’t think of an actor more suited to play the role than Tom Holland. He is quite simply loaded with talent and I look forward to seeing his emotional range on display in such a massive blockbuster. As far as Watts is concerned, I haven’t seen any of his work. Cop Car does look intriguing though so I’ll certainly give him a chance.

Regardless, I’ll be checking out Holland’s debut in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, and then in his first standalone Spidey film come 2017.
